Understanding the Mental Picture Of Natrum Muriaticum

Abstract :

Natrum muriaticum , commonly known as common table salt is one of  the most frequently prescribed polychrest homoeopathic medicine. It has wide range of action and has characteristic mental and physical symptoms. Homoeopathy believes in holistic approach in treating the patient. Mental symptoms aids in the process of individualization and thus helps in prescribing suitable constitutional medicine.  According to Dr. J.T.Kent , characteristic mental symptoms are given more priority while forming the totality of  symptoms. This article highlights the characteristic mental symptoms of natrum muriaticum patient that will help in identifying the personality profile of such patients in our clinical practice.

Introduction  :

Natrum muriaticum is among the most widely used polychrest medicine in homoeopathy. It is prepared from common table salt and belongs to mineral kingdom. It is also known as chloride of sodium , sodium chloride, table salt and common salt. Chemical formula is NaCl. It was proved by Dr. Hahnemann , Dr. W.H. Schussler , Austrian Society of Provers. It is a very deep and long acting biochemic medicine. [1] It is found in almost all the tissues of the body and most abundantly in crystalline lens and aqueous humors of eyes. It is best suited to pale , anaemic , emaciated people with profound weakness and weariness. [2] 

Mental picture of Natrum Muriaticum :

Patient of natrum muriaticum  is  melancholic , depressed,  sad and reserved. [3] Along with depression , there is marked irritability, crossness and the feeling of isolation.The cause of depression might be the death of loved ones , broken relationships, broken hearts or divorce. It is useful in cases of acute as well as chronic grief where it is followed by suicidal thoughts.[4] The patients becomes introvert and desires to be alone. There is silent grief, the patient weeps when she is alone[5]. There is great tendency to weeping, patient weeps bitterly and involuntarily. [4]  The patient cries from slightest cause and even sometimes cries without any cause. [6]  It seems that patient needs sympathy , but  to the contrary the patient is aggravated by consolation and even leads to anger.[7] She thinks that she is being pitied by others for her misfortune and gets more hurt and weeps [4]

They recollect past unpleasant memories in their mind and dwells on them and get more disheartened by the grief these thoughts produced. [2] These ideas doesn’t let the patient sleep and she seeks revenge. She holds grudges for a long time and becomes malicious with full of  hatred. She wants to stay alone and doesn’t wish to socialize but on the contrary she also desires for a company or a relationship. [5] After getting hurt in a relationship, the patient develops a kind of fear for getting attatched to someone or getting into a close relationship. There is a need to receive unconditional amount of love but she has fear of getting betrayed. The patient is unable to trust anyone and feels shy to express her emotions. [4]  She is unable to control her affections , and falls in love with someone whom she cannot get , i.e. unattainable person like a married man , coachman etc. She knows herself that it is foolish but she cannot do anything about it. [7] The patient feels lack of pleasure during coitus and has aversion to sex , having low sex drive . Patient falls in love with her own sex.  [4]

Patient is sympathetic and emotionally very sensitive. They don’t want to get hurt and neither want to hurt anyone. They always listen to the pain of others and imagine themselves in that situation and feel their sufferings. [8] They are taciturn and try to avoid company because they have been offended. [9] They have aversion to presence of others , especially strangers and that too during urination and thus cannot pass urine in presence of others. [4]. They are very irritable personalities who gets offended easily on slightest things [10] Child cross when he is spoken to or approached and cries readily on slightest cause [6]

The patient is hysterical and hypochondriac. Weeping alternates with laughter, there is laughing at inappropriate times. But the patient is always joyless, no matter how pleasing the situation is. [7] There is awkwardness and hurriedness, drops things due to nervous weakness. The patient has dreams that robbers entered in her house and on waking, she still feels the same and  searches the entire house. [6] Patient is full of fears such as fear of intimacy, betrayal, rejection , of being ridiculed or embarrassed. The patient has fear of closed spaces , heights and dark. He is scared of insects especially bumblebees  and spiders. He also fears of losing control, of insanity. The patient has weak memory, she loses the thread of her conversation , forgets what she was about to say. Concentration power is also weak. [7] The patient is disinclined to mental work and when the attempt is made , she makes many mistakes [2]

Discussion:

Natrum  muriaticum has a wide range of characteristic mental symptoms. Natrum muriaticum personality is that of a reserved , unapproachable , sensitive , hysterical and irritable person who is joyless and depressed from long continued grief. Mental generals are among the important symptoms that helps in framing the constitutional picture of the patient.

Dr. Kent has emphasized to give more importance to the mental symptoms which are specified by certain factors such as aggravation, amelioration or ailments from. Margaret Tyler called these mental symptoms as high grade or qualified mentals. [12] Keynote characteristic symptoms of the patient should be the prime guide in selection of similimum.
