State Of Hypertension With Homeopathic Remedies

Homeopathic Medicine for High Blood PressureElevated Arterial Blood Pressure is a major health problem particularly in developed countries. Persistent elevated level of blood pressure beyond the physiological limit is called ‘hypertensive state‘. Epidemiological studies have revealed that the risk of cardiovascular disease doubles with every 10 mm of Hg increase in systolic and 10 mm of Hg increase in diastolic blood pressure above the normal criteria.

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY :-

Homeopathy for High Blood Pressure – Blood pressure unless otherwise specified refers to the systemic arterial blood pressure which is defined as the force exerted by the blood against any unit area of the vessel wall. Systemic arterial blood pressure is not constant but is pulsatile. The highest pressure is achieved during the systole when the heart musculature contracts, while the lowest pressure occurs in the diastole when the heart musculature relaxes.

The physiological limits for the blood pressure varies with the age group mainly and by other factors like sex, diurnal variation, meals, sleep, emotion, exercise, etc.

Homeopathic Medicine for High Blood Pressure – Arterial blood pressure is maintained by cardiac output, heart rate and peripheral resistance. Cardiac output affects the blood pressure directly. As cardiac output is in direct proportion to the blood pressure, increase in the cardiac output results in the hypertension. Cardiac output further depends on venous return and heart rate. Hence the heart rate indirectly affects the blood pressure. Blood volume is also in direct proportion to the blood pressure. Hence decrease of blood volume is the first line of treatment in modern medicine.

Peripheral resistance is the resistance offered by the blood vessels to circulating blood. This is the basic etiology for development of hypertension in person with atherosclerotic changes. Persistent hypertension results in damage to vascular endothelium and causes atherosclerotic lesions. Hence person having atherosclerotic changes are prone to develop hypertension and vice versa.

CLASSIFICATION :-

Hypertension is classified into following two types based on etiology –

1.Primary or Essential hypertension – here the cause is unknown and it constitutes about 80-95% patients of the hypertension.

2.Secondary hypertension – here the hypertension results secondary to diseases of kidney, endocrines or some other organs. It comprises 5-20% cases of hypertension.

Clinically hypertension is classified as benign hypertensive and malignant hypertension.

Benign hypertension – the elevation of blood pressure is moderate and the rise is slow over the years. About 90-95% patients of hypertension belongs to this type.

Malignant hypertension – it is marked by sudden increase if blood pressure to around 200/140 mm of Hg or more in a known case of hypertension or in a previously normotensive individual.

CLINICAL FEATURES :-

Homeopathy for hypertension – Hypertension is usually asymptomatic until the diagnosis is made at a routine physical examination or when the complications arises. Repeated check up of blood pressure should be done in a known case of hypertension. Sometimes the patient may have symptoms of other disease in secondary hypertension. Patient may present with ocular haemorrhage or nose bleed with history of recurrenence which is strongly suggestive of hypertension.

ESTROGEN AND HYPERTENSION :-

Estrogen is a C18 steroid secreted mainly by theca interna cells of ovarian follicles and in small quantity by corpus luteum of ovaries. Estrogen is synthesised from cholesterol.

Estrogen prevents cardiovascular diseases by several ways.
It increases high density lipoprotein (HDL), particularly HDL 2 i.e. Good cholesterol.
It decreases low density lipoprotein i.e. Bad cholesterol.
Estrogen inhibits platelet and macrophage aggregation at the vascular endothelium.
Estrogen stimulates secretion of nitric oxide (NO) and prostacyclins from vascular endothelium which are vasodilators.

As a collective result, estrogen prevents risks of atherosclerosis, thrombosis and ultimately hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases. Hence the ratio of cardiovascular diseases in premenopausal females are low as compared to male of same age which changes dramatically after menopause when the estrogen deficit stage is there.

COMPLICATIONS OF HYPERTENSION :-
Hypertension causes atherosclerotic changes in the blood vessels and in severe cases of uncontrolled hypertension the cerebral stroke and renal failure results in death Hypertension may cause recurrent epistaxis and ocular haemorrhage.

HOMEOPATHIC REMEDIES OF HYPERTENSION :-

Although it is against the principles of Homeopathy, some medicines are said to have marked effect to cure hypertension. The duration of treatment does not necessarily extend life long, as seen in orthodox school of medicine.

Lachesis:-
It is the head remedy for high blood – pressure. The patient is worse on waking. Sleeps into an aggravation. Restlessness is marked. Patient cannot bear tight clothes, wants to loosen them. It should be tried first and will help majority of cases.Cyanosis. Irregular heart beat.

Aurum Metallicum:-
When due to suppressed anger or resentment. Over sensitiveness; roaring in head; vertigo; violent headache; fear of death. Palpitation. High Blood pressure – valvular lesions of Arterio-sclerotic nature.

Aconitum Napellus:-
Palpitation; great anxiety; heat of body. Shooting in heart region. Fainting with tingling. Pulse full, hard, tense and bounding, sometimes intermittent. Temporal and carotid arteries felt when sitting.

Strophanthus Hispidus:-
Useful for aged in heart trouble dependent on kidney diseases. Irritable heart with tense arteries and a free discharge of urine. Increases systole and diminishes the rapidity of heart.Pulse quickened. Heart’s action weak, rapid, irregular, due to muscular debility and insufficiency.

Natrum Muriaticum:-
It reduces blood-pressure in patients who have craving for salt and who worry a lot. Suppressed anger. Fluttering, palpitating, intermittent pulse. Heart’s pulsation shake body. Tachycardia. Sensation of coldness of heart.

Baryta Muriaticum:
Arterio-sclerosis and cerebral affection in the aged. Vertigo and noises in the ears. Increased tension of pulse. Icy cold body with paralysis. Thickening of arteries with cardiac dilatation and bronchial affectation in old persons.

Belladonna:
Violent palpitation, prolonged echoing sound in head with laboured breath. Palpitation from least exertion. Throbbing all through the body. Skin flushed and hot. Anxiety or fear; no thirst. Vertigo with falling on the left side or backward. Worse from touch, noise, jar and lying down.Heart seemed too large. Rapid but weakened pulse.

ADVICE FOR DIET :-
Salt should be strictly prohibited in patient of hypertension as it causes more water retention and ultimately increase in blood volume. Increased blood volume in turn increases blood pressure.

Green vegetables and diet with low fat should be taken.
