Beyond Symptom Relief: A Case Report on Homoeopathic Treatment of Chronic Allergic Rhinitis

Abstract

Allergic Rhinitis is an atopic IgE mediated inflammatory response of nasal mucosa presenting with symptoms of sneezing, nasal congestion, clear rhinorrhea, and nasal pruritus. (1, 2) It is also defined as inflammation of the nasal mucosa that occurs when a person inhales something he or she is allergic to, such as animal dander, pollen, dust, etc. (2). Conventional modern medicine tries to mitigate the symptoms of allergic rhinitis and provides palliation whereas Homoeopathic medicine can provide a true “cure” for the condition through a constitutional Similimum.

Keywords: Allergic rhinitis , Homoeopathy, Cure, Similimum

Introduction

    • Allergic Rhinitis is an atopic IgE mediated inflammatory response of nasal mucosa presenting with symptoms of sneezing, nasal congestion, clear rhinorrhea, and nasal pruritus. (1, 2) It is also defined as inflammation of the nasal mucosa that occurs when a person inhales something he or she is allergic to, such as animal dander, pollen, dust, etc. (2)
    • Addition to nasal symptoms of sneezing, nasal congestion, rhinorrhea and nasal pruritus, Allergic Rhinitis may also present with associated allergic conjunctivitis, non-productive cough, eustachian tube dysfunction and chronic sinusitis. Physically clinicians may notice mouth breathing, frequent sniffling and/or throat clearing, transverse supra tip nasal crease (Allergic salute) and dark circles under the eyes. (Allergic shiners).
    • Allergic Rhinitis can be classified as seasonal (intermittent) or perennial (chronic), or based on symptom duration as persistent and intermittent, or based on severity as mild, moderate, and severe.
  • Over 400 million people around the world suffer from Allergic Rhinitis. In India the prevalence of this disease is gradually increasing in the last 2 decades among which a large extent remains underdiagnosed and undertreated. It is associated with significant morbidity, loss of productivity and health care costs. (2)
  • Precipitating Factors – 1. Inhalants – Dust, pollens, feathers, house mites, moulds, perfumes. 2. Ingestants – Any food item. 3. Contactants – cosmetics. 4. Infection – bacteria and products of inflammation. 5. Endogenous – Parasites, tissue proteins, etc. 6. Drugs – Aspirin, iodides, etc.

Predisposing Factors

Symptoms

  1. Hereditary
  2. Hormonal – as the disease begins at puberty and increases during pregnancy.
  3.  Climate – humidity change and atmospheric pollution.
