Role of Murphy repertory in cases of Behavioral Disorders in children


Childrens are the future of society and nation .Along with physical health, mental and emotional health of  children are also of utmost  importance. Behavioral disorders have a major impact on social and emotional health of children as well as family members. They include ADHD, OCD, CD, ODD. Homoeopathy being a holistic science has marvelous results in these disorders. Every science has its progress with time, in the same way homeopathic modern repertories have evolved to a great extent. A group of modern repertories has been available but Robin Murphy  has done an enormous work especially on childrens in Homoeopathic Medical Repertory .

Behavioral Disorders are the disorders most commonly seen in children and adolescent groups.  Childhood is the most vital period in one’s life ,the phase from which the whole future is decided. Behavioral  disorders include a variety of disorders from which most common are  ADHD, OCD, CD, Anxiety disorders, Bipolar disorders ,ODD. These disorders hinder growth of children, can restrict their routine day to day activities, they can face difficulty in concentrating for a long time, can have  impulsive behavior which can harm to themselves and surroundings and many more hazardous effects .Quality of life of children is compromised. Homoeopathy considers the patient as a whole taking into consideration physical as well as mental and emotional symptoms .Thereby providing gentle and permanent cure to these disorders. With the help of Homoeopathy the quality and well-being of children is improved , anger issues, hyperactivity ,anxiety issues ,concentration difficulties all can be managed very well.


Behavioral disorders are more common among younger adolescents than older adolescents. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), characterized by difficulty paying attention, excessive activity and acting without regard to consequences, occurs among 3.1% of 10–14-year-olds and 2.4% of 15–19-year-olds. Conduct disorder (involving symptoms of destructive or challenging behaviour) occurs among 3.6% of 10–14-year-olds and 2.4% of 15–19 years old. Behavioral disorders can affect adolescents’ education and conduct disorder may result in criminal behavior.


There is no single cause for behavioral disorders. There are multiple factors which play an important role such as genetic factors, exposure of toxins such as tobacco, alcohol during pregnancy, any type of psychological trauma during pregnancy, environmental factors such as  faulty parenting, physiological factors include release of  neurobiological markers and temperamental factors.


There are various types of behavioral disorders but major types are:- 

  1. Attention –Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder
  2. CD – Conduct Disorder
  3. ODD- Oppositional Defiant Disorder

Now let’s see in detail one by one.

1)Attention –Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder(ADHD):-

A persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interferes with functioning or development, as characterized by


  • Often fails to give close attention to details and or makes careless mistakes in schoolwork, at work, or during other activities.
  • Often has difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play activities.
  • Often does not seem to listen when spoken to directly.
  • Often avoids, dislikes, or is reluctant to engage in tasks that require sustained

mental effort.

  • Has lack of concentration so makes mistakes in homeworks, in performing routine activities, can’t remain focused during lectures, conversations, or lengthy reading.
  • Is often easily distracted by extraneous stimuli.
  • Often has difficulty organizing tasks and activities as a result avoids all types of mental exertion.


  • Often fidgets with or taps hands or feet or squirms in their seat.
  • Often runs about or climbs in situations where it is inappropriate.
  • Often unable to play or engage in leisure activities quietly.
  • Is often “on the go,” acting as if “driven by a motor”.
  • Talks excessively, Interrupts in talks of others, makes irrelevant talks.

2) Conduct Disorder (CD):-

  • Lying to others
  • Mischievous
  • Cruel behavior to others or animals providing harm to one’s property.

3)Oppositional Defiance Disorder:-

A pattern of angry/irritable mood, argumentative/defiant behavior, or vindictiveness lasting at least 6 months as evidenced by at least four symptoms from any of the following categories and exhibited during interaction with at least one individual who is not a sibling.

Angry/Irritable Mood:-

  • Often loses temper.
  • Is often touchy or easily annoyed.
  • Is often angry and resentful.

Argumentative/Defiant Behavior

  •  Often argues with authority figures or, for children and adolescents, with adults.
  •  Often actively defies or refuses to comply with requests from authority figures or with rules.
  •  Often deliberately annoys others.
  •  Often blames others for his or her mistakes or misbehavior.


  •  Has been spiteful or vindictive at least twice within the past 6 months.


Homoeopathy being a holistic science  treats the patient as a whole and not only  the  diseased part. It is a science which believes in Individualization, as it is very rightly said no two fingers are alike then how can two individuals be alike!

 So as mentioned in Organon of Medicine in Aphorism 5 and in guidelines of case taking by Hahnemann in  homoeopathic case taking history of present illness, ODP, past history , family history, obstetric history,  life space of patient, each and every minute detail of case should be carefully investigated. As a result genetic factors, environmental factors, temperament factors  all are taken into consideration and after careful study of case homoeopathic remedy is prescribed which not only helps in improving behavior but also improves quality of life of patients.

It is also mentioned in Aphorism 4 that physicians should be Preservers of Health.  He should know the obstacles which hinder the process of cure and should carefully remove them. Proper psychotherapy and counseling of patients in such cases are of utmost importance.

Hahnemann has given clear guidelines for treating mental diseases in Aphorism 210-230.

No other repertory is found much useful for children except Murphy Repertory. The chapter almost includes all general affections of children, their constitutions along with mental symptoms of the children .So a wide number of rubrics and medicines are available in Homoeopathy for different types of Behavioral disorders. So let’s not limit Homoeopathy for only coughs, colds, and vomiting. It has the capacity to cure behavioral disorders and prevent them further. Dynamic science has much to offer to the world.
