Homoeopathic Approach to Acne Vulgaris

Homoeopathic Approach to Acne Vulgaris

Abstract:

Acne vulgaris is a multifactorial inflammatory skin condition that commonly affects adolescents but may persist into adulthood. While conventional treatments target sebum production, microbial activity, and inflammation, the homeopathic approach emphasizes individualized treatment based on a patient’s physical, emotional, and constitutional characteristics. Homeopathy views acne not merely as a local skin issue, but as an expression of internal imbalance. Remedies such as Hepar sulphuris calcareum, Silicea, Sulphur, Kali bromatum, and Natrum muriaticum are commonly used, selected according to the patient’s unique symptom picture. Homeopathic medicines aim to stimulate the body’s natural healing response, reduce recurrence, and improve overall well-being. Clinical experience and anecdotal evidence suggest positive outcomes with minimal side effects. However, rigorous scientific studies and randomized controlled trials are limited. Integration of homeopathic principles with holistic lifestyle modifications may offer a complementary strategy in managing acne vulgaris, particularly for patients seeking natural or non-toxic alternatives.

Introduction:

Acne vulgaris is a common chronic skin condition that affects the hair follicles and sebaceous gland . It is primarily seen during adolescence , but it can appear to individuals of all ages.Acne is typically present in combination of comedons , pastules, nodules and papules . Acne is characterized by pimples most commonly seen on the face , chest and back . It occurs due to over activity of sebaceous gland.Acne vulgaris is common type of acne that is developed during adolescence.Sebaceous gland plays an important role in acne vulgaris , acne vulgaris occurs due to over secretion of sebaceous gland. Sebaceous glands are inactive till puberty and sex hormones activate them at the time of puberty, particularly in males sebaceous glands are suddenly stimulated by sex hormones.

Especially dehydroepiandosterone . It leads to development of acne on the face. Acne disappears within a few years when sebaceous glands become adapted to the sex hormones.Testosterone and insulin growth hormone increase the sebum secretion.

There are two types of lesions – Inflammatory and non-inflammatory . Blackheads and white heads are non-inflammatory lesions whereas nodules, papules and pustules are inflammatory lesions.
