Abstract

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a set of symptoms due to elevated male hormones in  women. 

 It occurs mainly by three causes – 

1. Cyst in the ovaries  

2. High levels of male hormone  

3. Irregular or skipped periods  

There are some other factors like: Genetics, environmental factors, lifestyle and diet, and low-grade  

inflammation.  

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine and metabolic disorder in  women characterized by hormonal imbalances like high androgen levels, irregular  menstrual cycles (oligo-anovulation), and polycystic ovaries.

Epidemiology

 Studies indicate a prevalence of 6-13% among women of reproductive age,  influenced by diagnostic criteria and ethnicity, with higher rates in some groups.  

 Pathologically, PCOS is characterized by hyperandrogenism, chronic anovulation, and  polycystic ovaries, which lead to a high incidence of insulin resistance (50-70%), metabolic  syndrome, and endometrial cancer. 

Introduction: 

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a disorder primarily characterized by signs and  symptoms of androgen excess and ovulatory dysfunction. Depending on diagnostic  criteria, this disorder affects 6% to 20% of reproductive aged women .

Typical clinical features include hirsutism, irregular menses, chronic anovulation,  and infertility.  

• The Treatment of women with PCOS not attempting pregnancy is combined  hormonal contraceptives to regulate menstrual cycles and decrease serum  androgens by increasing sex hormone-binding globulin levels.  

• Although serum androgens decrease by 3 months after initiating hormonal therapy may take longer to observe the beneficial effects on hirsutism and acne.  

 Etiology 

There are many causes of PCOS. It is believed to be a combination of genetics  and lifestyle factors. 

PCOS generally have 

• High LH level  

• Hyperandrogenism  

• Environmental factor 

• Genetics  

Pathophysiology : 

The pathophysiology of PCOS involves predispositions and many  environmental factors which lead to hormonal imbalance. 

Key components include an over action of HPO (hypothalamus-pituitary-ovarian)  which leads to excessive androgens.

1. Increased LH hormone 

2. Hyperandrogenism  

3. Ovarian dysfunction  

4. Progesterone deficiency

You can manage PCOS effectively by: 

• Irregular menstrual cycle  

• Unwanted hair growth  

• Acne 

• Over Weight or Weight gain especially around the abdomen region  

• It also includes Thinning of scalp hairs

Thuja: Fixed ideas, feeling of being controlled, multiple ovarian cysts, history of  vaccinations/suppressions, warty growths. 

Natrum mur: PCOS after Irregular menses, reserved/grief, craving salt,  headaches, hair loss, acne, worse consolation 

Apis melifica: Right-sided ovarian cysts, stinging/burning pains, edema, worse  heat, restlessness, jealousy. 

Folliculinum: It includes Estrogen dominance picture, breast tenderness, short  cycles or prolonged bleeding.
