NAGPUR: Eminent homeopath, Dr Vilas Dangre, was conferred the Padma Shri in the field of medicine (homeopathy) this year. The announcement, made on January 25, 2025, recognises a lifetime of dedication to serving humanity. At the age of 70, Dr Dangre continues to be a beacon of compassion, curing countless lives while inspiring many through his work.
Dr Dangre etched his place in history when he treated Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the 2014 Assembly election campaign. PM Modi, after a rally at Kasturchand Park in Nagpur, experienced a loss of voice, raising doubts about his ability to address the following gathering in Brahmapuri. Dr Dangre’s homeopathic remedy proved to be a miracle. With reassurance from Union minister Nitin Gadkari, Modi took the medicine and his voice was restored almost instantly. The Prime Minister, impressed by its effectiveness, later requested the same medicine to be sent to New Delhi.
Dr Dangre’s professional journey is not just about curing diseases but also about healing society. For over 50 years, he has offered treatment to economically weak patients by charging a nominal fee. His clinic in Nagpur has become a sanctuary for those turned away by others, with over one lakh patients gaining from his expertise.
Famed for his proficiency in diagnosing complex ailments through ‘Naddi’ (pulse examination), Dr Dangre has treated conditions ranging from severe skin diseases to mental health issues. Patients from all walks of life — including luminaries like Shiv Sena patriarch Balasaheb Thackeray, Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar, former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and BJP stalwart Lal Krishna Advani — sought his help when other treatments failed.
Born in 1954 in Chandurbazar, a small town in Amravati district, Dr Dangre’s roots in social service and spirituality trace back to his childhood. He joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) at the age of seven, where he imbibed the values of service and discipline under the guidance of Golwalkar Guruji. His association with the Ramakrishna Math during his teenage years further shaped his spiritual and social outlook.”Spirituality and societal values were ingrained in me from a young age. My life is a gift from the Almighty. I firmly believe in serving humanity without expecting rewards. Despite several attempts to draw me into politics, I have consciously chosen to stay away, focusing solely on my mission to heal and serve,” says Dr Dangre. Even after losing his vision a decade ago, Dr Dangre’s determination to serve remained unshaken. He trained doctors to carry forward his methods and continued practising with unwavering precision. His personal philosophy, shaped by adversities, reflects gratitude and humility. \”I am living a bonus life, saved by God’s grace from an accident and a severe health issue. I will continue serving as long as I can,” he says. Not one to practise for monetary gains, Dr Dangre has donated much of his earnings to social causes. This recognition is not merely a personal achievement for Dr Dangre but a tribute to the values he embodies — a blend of medical excellence, humanitarian spirit, and unwavering dedication to service. As Nagpur celebrates this honour, Dr Vilas Dangre remains an inspiration, proving that true success lies in enriching the lives of others.
