Book Review on Absolute Homeopathic Materia Medica by Dr Bainu Sharma and Dr Navin S. Pawaskar

We have gleaned invaluable knowledge from the works of Dr Ishwardas Tarkas and Dr Ajit Kulkarni in the past. Their writings have consistently demonstrated a remarkable blend of comprehensiveness and lucidity. Once again, our expectations were met and exceeded with their latest offering, “Absolute Homeopathic Materia Medica.”

The authors have employed a multidimensional perspective to explore Materia medica, a method adept at elucidating complex yet interconnected information. This unique approach has enabled them to explore diverse facets of homeopathic Materia medica, rendering the book valuable not only to seasoned homeopathic clinicians but also to students seeking comprehensive understanding.

The authors have meticulously hand-picked the pearls of wisdom and experience of veteran authors within the field. This compilation serves as a treasure of information extracted from the best sections of best source books.

Structured into cohesive chapters, the book’s organization ensures a modular compilation of information within each remedy. This fundamental layout and modular presentation enable users to access information autonomously or in conjunction with other sections, fostering greater flexibility and comprehension.

The subject matter is arranged sequentially and systematically. Each remedy is discussed under the sections of Generals, Particulars and Relations. Under Generals, inclusion of headings like Nerves and Tissues are innovative supplements in addition to other sections.

Of particular significance are the Monogram and Remedy relationship featured in this book. There are notes at the end of each remedy, along with a separate section on ‘How to study remedy relationships’ which makes this book very useful and unique. Authors have done great service to the fraternity by focusing on this rather neglected segment of Homoeopathic Materia medica

The strength of this book is that the authors are successful at correlating symptomatology from both old and new literature, complemented by insights derived from their extensive clinical experiences. This seamless blending has enriched the therapeutic features of each remedy.

In brief, it’s a well-balanced work, carefully compiled, comprehensive and up-to- date. The book presents the material in an accessible form; being concise and at the same time sufficiently elaborate for the readers. Hence, it is convenient for reference as well as for detailed study. This book has dual use. It is a bedside reference book for the clinicians, as well as a primary study book for graduate and post graduate scholars.

While a work of this sort cannot be profusely illustrated, we would like to make a mention of a few points which we feel will add value.

  • The hallmark symptoms can be highlighted based on clinical utility in practice or gradation of symptoms may be used to differentiate symptoms of importance. It will be of great assistance to the homoeopathic clinicians in their busy practice and to the students during examination.
  • The active principles of the remedies can be mentioned for better understanding of the action of the remedy.
  • The clinical conditions under the domain of each remedy can be added for bedside validation.

We express deep reverence for the sincere and gigantic effort to contribute to the science of Homoeopathy
