What is bird flu?
As we aware of bird flu or avian influenza, is a strain of influenza virus, mostly found in birds. Most strains of avian influenza virus are mainly found in the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts of infected birds, and not in meat.

Outbreak of bird flu or avian influenza has been confirmed in ‘poultry birds’ in six states — Kerala, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and Punjab. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has been already published protocols to protect humans from this virus.

How bird flu spreads in humans-
In humans Bird flu spreads to humans through nose, mouth, and eyes by close contact with an infected alive or dead bird. The sick birds shed the viruses in their saliva, nasal droplets, and feces. Humans can contract bird flu while coming into contact with infected bird secretions or surfaces and then touching the eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands. Markets, where live birds are sold, can also be a source of bird flu.

Common possible transmission ways include: Touching droppings or beddings of infected birds.

In case a human contracts the virus, their chances of spreading from human to human are low.
However, if it does infect and spread in humans, it can cause severe sickness, and has a high mortality rate of 60%

Prevention Measurements
• Do not go near to or touch bird droppings/feathers or sick or dead birds.
• Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water frequently.
• Avoid visiting live animal markets or poultry farms.
• Do not eat uncooked meat- Proper cooking inactivates the virus present inside the meat.
• Do not eat uncooked EGG.
• Use mask/ gloves at the time of handling raw chicken.
• Do not to wash the chicken in running water, it can spread virus in water according to The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).

An outbreak of bird flu has been confirmed in India, with as many as 11 states reporting thousands of birds falling prey and infecting humans and other birds, animals too.
