Introduction
Homeopathy utilizes a wide range of medicines prepared from different sources. The actions of some drugs are well established through methods like drug proving, accidental proving, toxicological effect, and clinical proving. Remedies with well-known, wide-ranging pathogenetic effects are known as polychrest drugs and are frequently prescribed. Conversely, there are many remedies whose full action and detailed pathogenetic effects are not yet fully known; these are termed rare remedies and are not frequently used, often because their actions are limited to some specific organ or part of the body.
The vast number of drugs listed in the Materia Medica can sometimes lead to confusion for the physician. While polychrest drugs are often successfully prescribed based on symptom similarity, difficulties arise when it is challenging to find a single drug to cover the totality of symptoms in cases such as paucity of characteristic symptoms, suppression of complaints, or advanced pathological changes. In such complex situations, or when detailed case taking is not possible (e.g., when a patient is unable to describe suffering), or when quick action or palliative treatment is needed, the physician must prescribe on the basis of present signs and symptoms, and this is where rare remedies play an important role.
