Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia Committee(HPC)
The HPC was constituted in Sept, 1962, on the recommendation of the Homoe. Sub- committee of the Drug Technical Advisory Board, on the question of control of homoeopathic drugs Under The Drug & Cosmetics
Act,1940, & Rules 1945. The homoeopathic drugs are prepared mainly from Plants, Animals & minerals. For this purpose , the committee has experts from Chemistry, Botany & Pharmacology branches besides manufacturers of medicines and
homoeopathic practitioners as well as officials who are concerned with the work of testing & research in Drugs.HPI is included in the second schedule of drugs & cosmetic act- 1940.
We in India used to follow the H.P.U.S. up to 1971 because there was no separate book of our own.
Monographs
The general plan of pharmacopoeia is to lay down the direction for the selection and preparation of drugs that are thoroughly adapted to the purpose of homoeopathic prescribing.these directions and specification for each drug are called ââmonoghraphsââ
Features
1] The standards and strengths are stated in the monographs of the pharmacopeia and are applied to articles that are intended for medicinal use ,but not necessarily to articles that may be sold under the same name for each purpose
2] All statements contained in the monographs constitute standard for the official substances.
3] There is no set frame to protect against all possible impurities.
Conclusion:-
the object of homoeopathic pharmacopeia is to list remedies used in homoeopathic treatment and give proper instructions as to their identity and preparation of the drugs similar to those used in the original proving. Pharmacopeia also describes the standard methods and gives them standard of purity that has to be followed when preparing the medicines
