Beyond Sleeping Pills: The Role of Homeopathy in Managing Insomnia

ABSTRACT: Insomnia is a common condition that often occurs alongside other issues, such as anxiety. The most common anxiety disorder is generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), marked by intense concern over daily circumstances. Insomnia and anxiety medications may cause negative side effects, and the latter can be ineffective for as many as 30% of individuals. Traditional treatment methods, such as medication, typically offer short-term relief and can come with unwanted side effects or the risk of dependency. This has resulted in a heightened curiosity about alternative methods, such as homeopathy. Homeopathy, founded on the idea of “like cures like” and personalized remedy choices, provides a holistic approach to addressing insomnia. This article examines how homeopathy can assist in managing insomnia

INTRODUCTION:

Insomnia is a long-term sleep condition characterized by challenges in initiating or maintaining sleep, waking up too early, and experiencing non-restorative sleep. It is prevalent in the general population and even more so in primary healthcare environments. Insomnia frequently accompanies psychiatric disorders like anxiety, depression, and schizophrenia, impacting almost half of individuals with these conditions.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is defined by persistent, uncontrollable anxiety that endures for many months, typically accompanied by physical manifestations. Schizophreniform disorder resembles schizophrenia but endures for one to six months and does not considerably disrupt daily activities.

Primary therapies for insomnia consist of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), whereas anxiety is typically treated with SSRIs, SNRIs, and sometimes benzodiazepines or non-benzodiazepine receptor agonists. Nonetheless, these drugs may lead to adverse effects, and a considerable portion of patients do not react sufficiently. Antipsychotics are generally prescribed for schizophreniform disorder, but numerous patients exhibit a limited response.
