Introduction: Fibroids are the commonest benign (non-cancerous) tumors that grow in the muscle layer of the uterus (myometrium).
They are composed of smooth muscles and fibrous connective tissue, so named as uterine leiomyoma or myoma.
Fibroids are mostly located in the body of the uterus and are usually multiple.
They can be Intramural (70-75%), Subserosa, Submucosal. They are initially intramural in position, but subsequently, they are pushed outwards or inwards, so become subserosa and submucosal respectively.
Incidence: It is estimated that at the age of 30 years, 20% of women may have fibroid. Highest incidence is between the age of 35-45 years of age. These are more common in nulliparous women.
Etiological factors: Fibroid is predominantly oestrogen dependent tumour, can grow in size during pregnancy, pill users and following menopause there is cessation of growth.
In case of nulliparity, frequency even high amongst multiparous women. Obesity may also be a risk factor of uterine fibroids.
Clinical presentation: Majority of fibroid remains asymptomatic.
Menorrhagia is the classic and most common symptom of symptomatic fibroid.
Metorrhagia or irregular bleeding may occur.
