Let’s Pray For Cancer Sufferers: 4 February Celebrated As World Cancer Day

Cancer is a term defined for diseases in which abnormal cells divide without control, forming a lump called a tumour. If left untreated, the tumour can grow and spread into the surrounding normal tissue, or to other parts of the body via the bloodstream and lymphatic systems, and can affect the digestive, nervous, and circulatory systems or release hormones that may affect body function.
Cancer is the second-leading cause of death worldwide.
According to the National Cancer Institute, there are over 100 types of Cancer such as in Bladder, Colon, Rectal, Endometrial, Kidney, Leukaemia, Liver, Melanoma, Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, Pancreatic, Thyroid, etc. Carcinoma is cancer that begins in the skin or in tissues that line or cover internal organs. Sarcoma is a cancer that begins in bone, cartilage, fat, muscle, blood vessels, or other connective or supportive tissue. Leukaemia is cancer that starts in blood-forming tissue, such as the bone marrow and causes large numbers of abnormal blood cells to be produced and enter the blood. Lymphoma and multiple myeloma are cancers that begin in the cells of the immune system. Central nervous system cancers are cancers that begin in the tissues of the brain and spinal cord. Also called malignancy.
Cancer tumours can be divided into three groups:
Benign – Non-cancerous and rarely threaten life. For example, a brain tumour inside the skull.
Malignant – Cells of malignant tumours can break off from the main (primary) tumour and spread to other parts of the body (metastasis). For example, lung cancer.
Precancerous – Condition involving abnormal cells which may (or is likely to) develop into cancer.
Risk factors for cancer include:

  • heavy alcohol consumption
  • smoking
  • excess body weight
  • physical inactivity
  • poor nutrition
  • genetics
  • ageing
