MUMPS
DEFINITION
Mumps is a viral infection which affects the parotid glands, salivary glands below and in front of the ears. The disease spreads through infected saliva.
MODE OF TRANSMISSION
By airborne respiratory droplets (coughs or sneezes).
By touching a contaminated surface (blanket or doorknob).
By saliva (kissing or shared drinks).
CAUSATIVE ORGANISM
Paramyxovirus, a member of the Rubulavirus family.
PERIOD FOR DEVELOPMENT
The infectious period is considered from 2 days before to 5 days after parotitis onset, although virus has been isolated from saliva as early as 7 days prior to and up to 9 days after parotitis onset. Mumps virus has also been isolated up to 14 days in urine and semen.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
Pain in the swollen salivary glands on one or both sides of your face
Pain while chewing or swallowing
Fever
Headache
Muscle ache
Weakness and fatigue
Loss of appetite
COMPLICATIONS
Mumps complications include orchitis, oophoritis, mastitis, meningitis, encephalitis, pancreatitis, and hearing loss.
DIET & MANAGEMENT
Diet includes:

🔻Mashed potatoes
🔻Soups
🔻Fruits
🔻Ginger
🔻Garlic
🔻Black pepper
🔻Paneer
🔻Beans
Things to be avoided:
🔻Meat
🔻Citrus foods
🔻Processed foods
🔻Foods hard to chew
MANAGEMENT
Mumps can be managed by some of the home remedies like”
🔻Warm salt water gargle.
🔻Ice or heat packs applied to the neck area to relieve pain.
🔻Use a warm or cold compress to ease the pain of swollen glands.
Medical management
Patients diagnosed with mumps should be isolated for 5 days from the onset of symptoms to minimize the risk of infecting others.
A supportive medical care is indicated for patients with mumps. No antiviral agent is indicated.
Homoeopathic Remedies for Mumps
Belladonna is one of the best remedy for mumps.
Phytolacca decandra is good for hard tumours.
Pulsatilla nigricans is indicated when the ear eache is very severe. Also, when mumps affect testes or
mammae.and they become inflammed.
Abrotanum can be used when Pulsatilla fails.
Parotidinum, the nosode, is used as a preventive against the infection.
Pilocarpinum is an excellent remedy as a preventive.
