Traditional medicine has been promoted by the Himachal Pradesh state government, as the cabinet has approved a plan to upgrade facilities for alternative health care.
Promoting AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy) has been a principle of the Modi government’s health policy since first coming to power in 2014. The Union Ministry of AYUSH plans to set up and expand the number of ambitious schemes. Ayush services across the country stand as proof for the purpose of this policy.
The policy of the Government of Himachal Pradesh will be seen to encourage investment in the AYUSH sector. ET Healthworld reports that “there is a significant incentive capital subsidy on AYUSH therapy units at a 25 per cent rate of fixed capital investment with a limit of Rs 1 crore, which does not include the cost of land, four per cent interest abatement on loans. Ayush is fast becoming a big business in India. In the case of homoeopathy, last year it was reported that there was a fifty percent increase in patients seeking homoeopathic treatment and 77 percent of the households used Ayurvedic products. In addition, Ayush is considered a driver of the growth of the medical tourism industry in India.
Ayush is regularly in India as the main source of political discourse, both at home and abroad. While the Indian National Congress, the Ministry of AYUSH, the BJP governing – including Prime Minister Narendra Modi – have taken steps to promote alternative medicine. Modi referred to AYUSH at this year’s G20 conference in Osaka, Japan and was instrumental in convincing the United Nations to designate 21 June as International Yoga Day. In fact, Modi was named as the most influential figure in health earlier this year.
The upgrading of AYUSH facilities in Himachal Pradesh is clearly at the national level. With a hunger for such services and the political will behind them, India’s Ayush push shows no signs of slowing down.
