Berhampur: Union ministry of ayurveda, yoga and naturopathy, unani, siddha and homeopathy (Ayush) have accorded conditional permission to the government-run Biju Patnaik Homoeopathic Medical College located here to fulfil the minimum standard requirement of infrastructure, teaching and training facilities by December this year to enable admission into the bachelor of homeopathic medicine and surgery (BHMS) courses during the academic year of 2019-20.
The board of governors of the Central Council of Homeopathy (CCH), the apex body to verify infrastructure facilities of colleges before admission, inspected the college on June 7 and recommended for not allowing admission in the BHMS courses in view of the deficiencies reflected in the report of inspection.
The representatives of the college also attended the hearing on July 11. It was revealed in a letter from Government of India under secretary R.K. Khatri to the college principal.
“All the minimum standard requirements of infrastructure and teaching and training facilities as specified in the Regulation 3 of the Homeopathy Central Council (HCC) Regulations, 2013, be fulfilled by December 31 to get permission for a period not exceeding five years. Failing this, the college shall be denied permission from academic year 2019-20 onwards and action as envisaged under Section 19 of the act shall be initiated,” Khatri mentioned in the letter.
Twenty-five students take admission in the five-and-a-half years course of the BHMS in homeopathic medicine and surgery every year.
Principal Dr Rabindra Kumar Mishra said: “We have appraised the state government about this earlier. We would discuss the issue with our staff members and again request the state government to find a way out.”
Two years ago, Ayush had forbidden this government-run college for admission during 2016-17 for lack of infrastructure and shortage of faculty and non-teaching employees. The 49-year-old college, affiliated to the Berhampur University, is a well known name in Odisha, in providing education in the field of homeopathy, to the aspirants.
