Dr Sandeep Roy started his career 18 years ago in Nashik city of Maharashtra. His craving for more knowledge led him to read more and study more. He has since been practicing in Nashik and frequently visits few other cities. When people were shy of practicing Mistletoe therapy, he started presenting research papers in national and international conferences and also creating awareness about Mistletoe Therapy in India and in a few other countries like Germany, Malaysia, Bangladesh. He has also presented a research paper at the Ayush International Conference in Dubai organized by the government of India and hence become the 1st Indian to talk on the research work of Mistletoe on a Government Platform.
He has been instrumental in helping many doctors from across a few countries to come down to their proper prescription on Mistletoe including many allopaths. He is the only Indian to be on the international mistletoe research group. His original research paper on breast tumor regression and another one on quality of life has been well appreciated across the globe.
He was the organizing chairman on the International Conference on Integrative Oncology which is the only platform in India where doctors, researchers and students from Homoeopathy, Ayurveda, yoga, allopathy, naturopathy etc. share their experience and research work on a common platform.
Dr Abha (Editor): How and when did you first become interested in the field of medicine?
Dr Sandeep Roy: As the typical Indian Parents wanted their children to become either a doctor or an engineer, I was no exception. Although I became fond of medicine when I started studying the human body in the 1st year and the interest kept on increasing every year and by every subject that I studied.
Internship was an eye opener which exposed me to decision making and I loved it.
E.D: How did you come across Mistletoe therapy?
S.R: As a young practitioner, I had attended a small seminar in East India when one of the speakers had uttered the word “Mistletoe”, this word intrigued me so much that I made it a point to read more about it. I bought books and tried learning and then my interest grew even more that I started to look for more books and got in touch with people from Europe for more literature and research papers and tried to analyze the results which aroused my curiosity even more.
This led me to write my first review paper on Mistletoe therapy which was followed by a number of Original Research Papers and Individual Case Studies which were published in reputed peer reviewed International Medical Journals. I, hence became the only Indian to receive the honorary degree of AEMT (Advanced Expertise in Mistletoe Therapy) by the prestigious Carl Gustav Carus Cancer Institute, Germany.
I was once told that I am the only one in the entire world to be exclusively practicing Mistletoe Therapy for Cancer Management.
E.D: Do you consider Mistletoe therapy homoeopathic?
S.R: According to the definition of Homoeopathic Medicine in the drugs and Cosmetics Act of India, any Medicine that is recorded in Homoeopathic proving and is recorded in authoritative Homoeopathic literature of India and abroad is a Homoeopathic Medicine. Mistletoe is the common name of “Viscum Album” which is a part of our under graduate syllabus and is documented in the Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia of India, British Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia, United States Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia and the German Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia (maybe also in the other Pharmacopoeias which I have not read yet) and is also prepared according to the techniques of Homoeopathic pharmacy which are mentioned in the Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeias. Hence the Mother Tincture of Viscum Album (Mistletoe) qualifies to be a Homoeopathic Treatment for cancer and should hence forth be referred to as Homoeopathic Mistletoe Therapy.
E.D: Do you use mother tincture and higher dilutions also? If yes, what is your clinical experience?
S.R: I do use the Mother Tincture but have not felt the need to use the higher potencies although they have very good clinical results.
E.D: Do you use homoeopathic medicines along with Mistletoe for cancer therapy?
S.R: As I have already stated that I was told that I am the only practitioner in the whole world who is doing exclusively Homoeopathic Mistletoe Therapy for Cancer Management so the question in itself has the answer. Others are doing it with some or the other therapy according to their experience and expertise but I am only using the different variants of Homoeopathic Mother Tincture of Viscum Album (Mistletoe).
E.D: What obstacles you faced in practice?
S.R: The availability of the medicine in India is a real challenge and takes a lot of Government formalities and takes a lot of time to arrive from Europe. We have to follow this procedure for every Individual patient which is a very tedious job and hence sometimes the patients become very impatient and look for other options as they cannot wait that long for the medicines to arrive. Another big challenge is from our fellow practitioners from the conventional treatment who criticize and discourage every other medicine.
E.D: Can you share in what types of cancers you are getting positive results and in what percentage? Where are the failures?
S.R: Homoeopathic Mistletoe Therapy is not just one drug but we have to make a choice from a variety of many which have their own indications. So practically every Solid Tumor and all Liquid malignancies are covered as well.
The Homoeopathic Mistletoe Therapy is indicated in:
- Homoeopathic Mistletoe Therapy is found to be very useful in Palliation where is improves the Quality of life and Increases the Span of life of end stage cancer patients, as proven in a number of research papers.
- Early malignancies. Here it has the greatest scope, especially in Stage 0, i.e Carcinoma-in-situ.
- Advanced malignancies. Here it is of considerable help in inoperable tumours, recurrences, widespread metastases and in terminal cases, it brings about palliation.
- It is used as a prophylactic for malignant lesions in pre-cancerous states, where regression of the lesions take place.
- Surgery-Inoperable tumours become operable through delineation of the tumours by Homoeopathic Mistletoe Therapy. During the operation, it hastens a smooth convalescence. Early follow-up treatment by Homoeopathic Mistletoe results in a significant reduction in the incidence of recurrences and late metastases by about 30-40%.
- Concurrent with chemotherapy and/or radiation, Homoeopathic Mistletoe Therapy prevents or reduces toxic side effects, promotes tolerance as well as dispersion of the tumours.
E.D: Share your experience of the 3rd International Conference on Integrative Oncology held recently in January, 2018.
S.R: The 3rd ICIO saw growth in every aspect, be it in terms of quality of research papers that were presented, quality of speakers, Government involvement , delegate participation etc, the 3rd ICIO saw a participation from 8 different countries and more have promised to join in the following year but unfortunately we have decided not to continue with this one of its kind event where we had succeeded to integrate delegates, doctors, researchers from Homoeopathy, Ayurveda, Naturopathy , Yoga etc. This is the only platform in India where Integration on cancer treatment was discussed at an official level.
In the post conference Panel discussion, we made a few resolutions that was submitted to the Honorable Ayush Minister and was copied to all important government departments including the PMO and CCRH.
E.D: Apart from Mistletoe therapy, do you practice Homoeopathy?
S.R: My love and dedication to relieve cancer patients of their sufferings does not permit me to see other cases, so I have restricted myself to treating only cancer cases.
E.D: With so much of recent criticism with regards to Homoeopathy outside India, what is your say?
S.R: This matter had come up in the panel discussion of the 3rd ICIO where I was chairing the session and we had important dignitaries from Germany, Australia, Belgium, Sri Lanka , Bulgaria etc. and also some important government officials and very learned researchers , we came to the conclusion that India is leading in Homoeopathy as we are , although very little but substantiative research which has led to formulation of guidelines for new drug discovery by the CCRH and the discovery of nano particles in the Homoeopathic dilutions. Unfortunately, the west and the rest of the world succumbed to the criticism and was not able to follow the research path that we did, although we need to do a lot more.
E.D: Many chemists are using turmeric for cancer therapy. Please explain your stand.
S.R: Once again this is the Mother Tincture of Curcuma Longa which is being widely studied by the conventional doctors and are using a lot with a lot of benefits to the cancer patients. The newest thing in turmeric in cancer therapy is the advent of nano curcumin which is a lot better than the normal curcumin in terms of absorption and hence the results.
E.D: What are your future plans and aspirations?
S.R: We have demanded to the Ayush Ministry and the CCRH to grant us a 100 bedded State of the art Homoeopathic Cancer Hospital with all Modern diagnostic facilities and curative as well as palliative care.
We have also requested the Government to make specific changes in the Drugs and Cosmetics Act so that Mistletoe Remedies can be easily made available in India and hence see Homoeopathy rise to a new level in India and serve the cancer patients in a gentle way to restore the sick to health, to cure, as it is termed.
