WHO Collaborates with AYUSH, aims to Spread Traditional Medicine System Globally

WHOKolkata: World Health Organisation (WHO) has tied up with the Ministry of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy) to chalk out a detailed plan on how traditional modes of treatment can be adopted in foreign countries. The AYUSH Ministry has recently signed ‘Project Collaboration Agreement’ (PCA) with the WHO, headquartered at Geneva for co-operation on promoting the quality, safety, and effectiveness of serving provision in traditional and complementary medicine.

 

AYUSH system of medication has a significant role in delivering healthcare to masses. It is cost effective and will benefit economically challenged patients. According to sources, the AYUSH ministry has signed a Memorandum-of-Understanding (MoU) with countries like Malayasia, Hungery, Isreal as they have shown interest in promoting AYUSH as a method of treatment. The WHO has been developing a terminology in Ayurveda, Unani, Sidhha so that the terms which are originally in Sanskrit can be comprehended by the people in foreign countries and India’s traditional form of treatment can be implemented in other countries.

 

The Ministry has developed a comprehensive document on Ayurvedic terminologies with National Ayurveda Morbidity Codes (NAMC) through a consultative process of experts. The Ministry has also deputed Dr Geetha Krishnan Gopalakrishnan Pillai as the technical officer to the Traditional, Complementary and Integrative (TCI) Medicine unit of WHO at Geneva.

 

The main purpose behind the tie up is to promote the quality and safety of Traditional system and medicine and consumer protection through supporting WHO for the development and implementation of the WHO Traditional and Complimentary Medicine Strategy. The areas of collaboration include development of WHO publications, benchmark for training in Yoga, Ayurveda, Unani and Panchakarma. Dr Asit Panja, a professor of National Institute of Ayurveda who was a part of the team that prepared the Ayurveda Morbidity Codes said a standard terminology has been prepared so that Ayush can be adopted in foreign hospitals. The main purpose is to promote out traditional forms of treatment in abroad. Dr Sumit Sur, State President of National Ayurveda Students and Youth Association said: “The move will open a new dimension in the history of Ayush treatment. We welcome the move initiated by the Union Ministry of Ayush.” It may be here mentioned that the Bengal government has also emphasised on building infrastructure in Ayush department. A 50-bed hospital dedicated to AYUSH medications will soon come up in Alipurduar where the best of facilities and infrastructure will be available.
