Arrest of Traditional Medicine Practitioners Condemned

The AYUSH Medical Welfare Association (AMA) has protested against the arrest of practitioners of traditional Indian medicine systems such as homoeopathy and siddha branding them as quacks and demanded action against the officials for the same.
The AMA included practitioners of unani, siddha, homoeopathy, ayurveda, and yoga-naturopathy as members.
In a petition presented to District Collector Rohini R. Bhajibhakare here on Monday, K. M. Senthamilselvan, State president of the Association, deplored the arrest of Indian traditional medicine practitioners branding them as quacks. The petition said that the siddha, unani, ayurveda, homoeopathy studies were recognised by the government. Besides, they had properly studied on giving injection and medicines and stitch the injuries. The officials were insulting and harassing the traditional medicine practitioners by terming them as quacks and arresting and lodging them in prison.
The officials arrested doctors who had undergone courses recognised by the Indian Medical Association and Tamil Nadu Doctor MGR Medical University without any proper enquiry. If the officials had any doubt on them, they should complain about them to the Directorate of Medical Education. They had no authority to take action against them.
The petition demanded the Collector to initiate departmental action against the Joint Director of Health Services and the police for arresting the traditional system practitioners.
The practitioners of traditional medicine system played a key role in treating the dengue affected people in time and prevented the spread of the same in a big way. The official machinery should allow them to continue to treat the dengue patients. The association also demanded the immediate release of their members.
The association threatened to launch agitation of handing over the degree certificates of 15,000 traditional medicine practitioners to the Governor if their just demands were not conceded.
