Act against misleading ads: Ministry to state AYUSH boards

Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH) has pulled up Registration Boards, and Councils of Indian Medicine for failure to act against advertisements in violation of the Practitioners of Indian Medicine (Standards of Professional Conduct, Etiquette and Code of Ethics) Regulations,1982, in their respective states.
“It has repeatedly been brought to our notice that some Ayurvedic and Unani practitioners continue to put up hoardings of the clinic for publicity,” said K Natarajan, Secretary In Charge, Central Council of Indian Medicine under Ministry of AYUSH, in his warning letter to the two statutory bodies.
“It has also been observed that a number of Indian Systems of Medicine practitioners are misleading the general public with advertisements in various leading newspapers, claiming prevention or cure of various diseases like cancer, diabetes, heart disease, infertility etc., in violation of the regulations,” he said.
The Central Council of Indian Medicine has now asked for an immediate Action Taken Report on the issue. In January, the Ministry of AYUSH also roped in Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) to strictly monitor such advertisements and take appropriate action against the erring companies and doctors. ASCI has been given a self-monitoring mandate to identify potentially misleading advertisements and process complaints through its Consumer Complaints Council.
